Fundación EKI – Who they are and what they do
Fundación EKI is a Spanish non-profit organisation dedicated to improving access to quality education through renewable energy. The foundation works with schools, training centres and social organisations across Sub-Saharan Africa, helping institutions overcome energy poverty and create better learning environments for children and young people.
The organisation was established on the belief that access to reliable electricity is a fundamental enabler of education and opportunity. In many of the communities where Fundación EKI operates, schools and social centres face significant challenges due to unreliable or non-existent electricity infrastructure. By providing solar energy solutions tailored to the needs of educational and community facilities, the foundation helps create safer, more effective and more sustainable spaces for learning and development.
A key aspect of Fundación EKI’s approach is its focus on long-term sustainability. Alongside the installation of photovoltaic systems, the organisation works with local partners to ensure systems are properly maintained, monitored and integrated into the daily operation of the institutions they support. This helps maximise both educational impact and the long-term value of renewable energy investments.
Through partnerships with local organisations across Africa, Fundación EKI is helping to demonstrate how clean energy can be a catalyst for inclusion, education and social development, particularly for vulnerable children and young people.
What NEF does with Fundación EKI
NextEnergy Foundation is proud to begin a new partnership with Fundación EKI through a project designed to strengthen access to reliable renewable energy at the CSIM Sekeleka Centre in Macia, Mozambique. The centre provides essential support to vulnerable children, adolescents and young people, including many living with disabilities or facing situations of social vulnerability.
Located in Macia, in Mozambique’s Gaza Province, the centre plays a vital role within the local community. It provides education, care, support services and opportunities for young people who often face significant barriers to inclusion and development. Reliable electricity is essential to the centre’s daily activities, helping staff deliver services, supporting residential facilities and creating safe environments for learning and care.
Although a solar energy system was installed at the centre in 2025, ongoing monitoring has identified a significant challenge. Demand for electricity during evening and night-time hours regularly exceeds available battery storage capacity, requiring the centre to rely on an unstable public electricity supply. Frequent outages and interruptions can affect both the quality and continuity of services provided to residents and beneficiaries.
Through this partnership, NEF will support the expansion and upgrading of the centre’s solar photovoltaic system, with a particular focus on increasing battery storage capacity. The additional storage will allow more of the energy generated during the day to be used when it is needed most, improving reliability and reducing dependence on the public grid.
The project’s impact extends beyond technical improvements. More reliable electricity will help ensure that young people living at the centre have access to safe and comfortable facilities during the evening, while staff will be better equipped to deliver the educational, social and support services on which beneficiaries depend. The enhanced system will also contribute to lower operating costs and greater energy resilience over the long term.
For many of the children and young people supported by the CSIM Sekeleka Centre, stability and continuity of care can make a profound difference to their future opportunities. By strengthening the centre’s renewable energy infrastructure, the project helps create an environment where learning, inclusion and personal development can flourish.
Through its first collaboration with Fundación EKI, NextEnergy Foundation is supporting a practical and sustainable solution that places vulnerable young people at its heart. By improving access to clean and reliable energy, the partnership will help ensure that the CSIM Sekeleka Centre can continue providing life-changing support to those who need it most, both now and in the years ahead.
